Howto: Subscribe to RSS

First of all, what is RSS? RSS is most commonly expanded as “Really Simple Syndication”. It is a “simple” means of syndicating a blog. You, as a blog reader, can subscribe to any syndicated blog using any of a number of RSS readers. If you want a really good understanding of RSS, you can start with this excellent definition at Wikipedia.

This article simply shows you an easy way to subscribe to this blog site using the built-in RSS news reader with Internet Explorer version 8. This may work in version 7 also, but I am not sure if it will. All I can say is try it and see.

Step 1

OK, to begin with, you may want to keep the blog open in another window or tab  while working from this page. You can can click here on the site home page to open it in another tab or window.  Move down that page until you find the Meta item on the right side and click on the RSS Entries sub-item.

Step 2

Another browser window will now open which gives you the opportunity to choose from several methods of subscribing to this blog. We are going to use Internet Explorer’s built-in method. Now just click on “subscribe to this feed” as indicated here

Step 3

You will now get a pop-up with the name of the feed and options as to where you can save it in your list of feeds. Microsoft IE already comes preloaded with several feeds, as you will see later. For now, take the defaults and just click on the Subscribe button.

Step 4

After subscribing you will receive a confirmation of your new subscription. Now click on “View my feeds” to see all your feed subscriptions.

Step 5

The browser now shows you all of your feeds in a sidebar which you can open or close. You can always come back to this sidebar anytime by clicking on the favorites start on the IE toolbar. For now, click on the entry for this blog “Kathy Wood’s Feng Shui Newsletter”.

Step 6

The main browser window will now open to the feed coming from the site where the newsletter is posted. The feed is updated automatically whenever Kathy adds a new blog entry. This makes it very easy for you to check if there are any new entries without having to go directly to the site. Sometimes the full article may not appear in the feed and you may only see an excerpt of it. To see the full article, there is a link on the feed which will take you to the site and the article. Click on that link, as shown, and go there now. It is the little arrow just below the article heading.
